The active component of senna is called sennoside， the molecule of the component can be transformed to another substance by the microbe in the colon， rhein anthrone， it has the function of stimulating the colon activity (speeden the colon movement and improve digestion) and increase the liquid secretion. The laxation functin of sennoside and its active metabolite-rhein anthrone is considered to resist the large intestine to absord water and electrolyte and thereby increase the volume and pressure of the substances inside the bowel.
